If you wish to carry out research yourself, here are my top tips:-
- Begin with what you know – ask family members, search family photos, any original certificates you may have and family bibles
- Choose one method of saving the material you find and stick to it – this may be professional software, one of the many free web sites or your own method on your computer
- Back up all your information in a second location
- Spelling – there may be many ways in which to spell a surname – search all the different variations that you can think of and also remember that some original documents eg census records may also contain spelling mistakes
- Make sure you record the original source on all documents incase you need to go back in the future and check it
- Bear in mind, that you may discover something that may shock or surprise you!
- Remember the 1901 and 1911 census are the only full census’ in existence for Ireland
